Top-Load Automatic Washing Machine: Water Not Entering
If your top-load washing machine’s display works but water does not enter, the problem may be the water supply, inlet valve, lid switch, water-level sensor, wiring, or PCB.
Start with the water supply and inlet valve before suspecting the PCB. Follow these steps in order.
Step 1: Check the water supply

- Open the water tap fully.
- Check that the inlet hose is not bent, crushed, or blocked.
- Turn off the tap and unplug the machine before disconnecting the hose.
- Inspect the small mesh filter at the machine’s inlet and clean it gently if clogged.
If water pressure is weak or the filter is blocked, the machine may not fill correctly.
Step 2: Check the lid switch
- Close the lid properly.
- Select a normal wash program and press Start.
- Check whether a lid-lock indicator appears or an error code is displayed.
Some models will not open the inlet valve until the required lid or safety conditions are satisfied.
Step 3: Check the inlet valve
Add to Favorites
The inlet valve is an electrically operated solenoid valve that opens when the control system commands water filling.
With the machine unplugged:
- Inspect its connector and wiring.
- Look for corrosion, loose terminals, or burnt marks.
- If you have a multimeter and know how to use it safely, test the disconnected valve coil and compare the reading with the correct service specification.
An open-circuit coil may indicate a defective valve. A normal resistance reading does not guarantee that the valve opens correctly.
Step 4: Check the water-level sensor
Add to Favorites
The water-level sensor tells the PCB how much water is in the tub.
- Unplug the machine.
- Inspect the sensor connector and accessible pressure hose.
- Look for a disconnected, kinked, or damaged hose.
- Check for a sensor fault using the manufacturer’s test procedure.
A sensor that incorrectly reports a full tub may prevent further filling.
Do not blow into an electronic sensor or adjust its calibration screw unless the service manual specifically instructs you to do so.
Step 5: Check the PCB output
The PCB controls the inlet valve, but a working display does not prove that its valve-control circuit is healthy.
A qualified technician can test the valve circuit during a fill command using the model-specific service manual.
| Test result | Possible conclusion |
|---|---|
| Correct rated voltage reaches the valve, but it does not open | Faulty valve, blocked water path, or poor connection |
| No voltage reaches the valve | Wiring fault, missing safety condition, sensor issue, or PCB output fault |
| Valve and wiring are good | Check sensor signals, interlocks, and PCB control logic |
| PCB has visible damage | Further testing is needed before deciding whether to repair or replace it |
Never guess PCB pinouts or apply mains voltage directly to a sensor or valve. Live electrical testing should be performed only by a qualified technician.
