Automatic Washing Machine Rusting: Safety Instructions
Rusting in an automatic washing machine can damage its body, reduce its lifespan, and sometimes create electrical safety risks. Rust commonly develops because of water leakage, high humidity, detergent residue, or damaged paint.

1. Main safety risks of washing machine rust
- Electrical shock: If rust develops near wiring, electrical connectors, or damaged insulation, there may be a risk of electric shock.
- Water leakage: Corrosion around water connections or internal metal supports can indicate a leak or structural damage.
- Weak cabinet or frame: Severe rust can weaken the machine’s base, supports, or cabinet.
- Unstable operation: A badly corroded base can affect stability, particularly during spinning.
- Contamination: Rust particles can stain clothes, especially if corrosion is near the drum or water-contact components.
2. How to prevent rusting
1. Keep the machine dry
Wipe water from the cabinet, lid, and control panel after use. Keep the surrounding floor dry.
2. Check for water leakage
Inspect inlet hoses, drain hoses, taps, and visible connections. Repair leaks promptly.
3. Provide ventilation
Keep the laundry area ventilated and avoid leaving the machine in standing water or a persistently damp location.
4. Repair damaged paint
For minor exterior rust, disconnect the machine from power, dry the area, and use a suitable rust treatment and appliance-compatible protective paint. Follow the product instructions.
3. What should you do if your washing machine is already rusty?
- Switch off and unplug the machine if you can do so safely.
- If there is water around the plug or socket, do not touch them; isolate the power at the breaker if safe.
- Identify the rust location and check for leaks.
- Do not operate the machine if the base is badly corroded, the cabinet is unstable, or wiring and electrical parts are affected.
- Ask a qualified technician to inspect severe internal corrosion before using the machine again.
Important: Never spray water directly onto the motor, control board, wiring, or electrical connections. Do not apply ordinary paint or rust remover inside the drum or to parts that contact washing water.
